Pua Kala

The Pua Kala or “Hawaiian Prickly Poppy” is labeled toxic in botanical books but considered a healer in traditional Hawaiian medicine.

This piece portrays the Pua Kala in its four stages: bud, bloom, pregnant pod, and post seeded pod. Also shown is the yellow latex sap that bleeds when the leaves are broken. Watercolor is used to highlight the alluring elegance of the bloom and graphite to emphasize the unapproachability of its body.

The Original won the “Jurors Choice Award” in 2019 Malama Wao Akua Annual Exhibit at the Hui No’eau.
