‘U‘au - Hawaiian Petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis)
The Hawaiian ‘Ua‘u, named after their call “oo-AH-oo”, can be heard at night when they leave their underground burrows on the mountain tops of Haleakala, Mauna Loa, and Wai’ale’ale to hunt for squid in the Pacific Ocean. ‘Ua‘u are an endangered species with less than 1,000 estimated to be in existence.
